There’s nothing “Citric” about Citric Acid

Citric Acid is found in virtually all flavored beverages and it's one of the most common food additives found on almost any food label. Manufacturers proclaim Citric Acid as “natural” and “healthy.”

We disagree.

Citric Acid is not made from citrus fruits; it is made from Aspergillus N., which is a fungus more commonly referred to as “black mold." This allergen is known to cause several serious health issues.  To make Citric Acid, one feeds black mold a diet of corn syrup, sugar or molasses causing a fermentation process. The resulting mass from the fermentation is then simply filtered for the “byproduct” creating what is called “Citric Acid.”  Researchers have now started to induce mutagens on the parental strains of the black mold to improve its citric-acid producing strains. The most common mutagens used for this purpose are gamma radiation, ultraviolet radiation, and chemical mutagens.

above's mission

To bring the tremendous benefits of Alkaline to all beverage categories. We want to bring awareness and eliminate Manufactured Citric Acid from our food chain. In light of this mission, our goal is to create an ecosystem of healthy superior products that are free from Manufactured Citric Acid.  We will complete our mission one product category at a time starting with one of the worst culprit...

Sports drinks.

The FDA has never studied the potential health effects of Citric Acid.

Citric Acid was “grandfathered in” as GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) by the FDA in 1958 because Citric Acid was already in commercial use back then.

A recent study published in the National Institutes of Health proves that Manufactured Citric Acid has several negative health effects (concluding that more research is required and desired).  Here's the study.

Did you know this?

If not, you are not alone.

Every single person we have told has been utterly surprised, except the researchers actually publishing studies on citric acid.  Everyone asks the same thing: How can it be called “citric acid” when it’s made from black mold?  We agree.  It should be called “Black Mold Acid,” but for now we'll call it “Manufactured Citric Acid.”

Anchor 1

The foundation for Above’s existence is data and research.

Since 2018, we have researched the negative effect of consuming beverages with Manufactured Citric Acid and the benefits of consuming alkaline beverages.

Our conclusions are based on articles published by the National Institutes of Health and the Journal of American Dental Association, and on our proprietary research of consumer panel behavior with 100,000+ participants.

We pledged a mission to create awareness of Manufactured Citric Acid. To do so we created a badge. The NON MCA badge.

We invite others to take this same pledge.

Let's rid the world of Manufactured Citric Acid.

The foundation for Above’s existence is data and research.

Since 2018, we have researched the negative effect of consuming beverages with phthalates and the benefits of consuming alkaline beverages.

Phthalates are a known “endocrine disruptor” that lowers testosterone levels and is linked to higher miscarriage rates.

Our conclusions are based on peer reviewed scientific articles published by the National Institutes of Health over the last decade.

There are over 4,000 such scientific articles published in the last 5 years warning of the dangers of phthalates.

We pledged a mission to create awareness of phthalates and we proudly test every Above the Line production run to ensure that Above is phthalate free.

We invite others to take this same pledge.

Let’s rid the world of phthalates.
